SAM WHITE AQUATHON

From: 27/12/2014

Sam White died on his 29th birthday in 1988 after being hit by a car whilst cycle training. He had been involved in sport for most of his life. In the 1970’s Sam was ranked nationally in the top ten for his age group in the 200m freestyle. By the 1980’s he was not only a consistent top five finisher in triathlons, but also the SA Aquathlon Champion. To encourage others to experience the sports he loved, Sam organised triathlons, biathlons and aquathlons for the community generally and secondary schools in particular. His legacy is the spirit of this event.

Sam’s family sponsor the Sam White Memorial Aquathlon and every year help with its organisation as well. The event has strong support from loyal commercial partners, Triathlon SA, triathlon clubs and entrants, all of which explains why it is still a favourite after so many years.

  Splash n dash Logo.jpg

From: 28/03/2015 to: 29/03/2015

Ever popular swim and run format, the 'Splash and Dash' is the partner event to Australia's largest swim/run, ten Australia Day Aquathon! Not to be outdone we have a fantastic new course that takes in the south coastal route from picturesque Wollongong boat harbour, flagstaff hill and light house, along city beach to either the 3km turn at WIN Entertainment Centre or Wollongong golf course car park, and return to finish on top flagstaff hill. Two course, individual and tag team categories and a spectacular 'swim and run' experience.

For new comers, splash and dash is just that..a safe 'swim' of either 250m or 650m in Wollongong harbour watch carefully by lifeguards, and your shoes or a team mate await on shore. A sealed off concourse is where you place your shoes, and change from swim to run. Follow the volunteer instructions to exit or tag your runner (waiting in Team change) and off you go for a 3km or 5km run course. It's easy, fitness fun and a great summer event.

Shark Island Swim

From: 29/03/2015

1km Swim-Start 9:30am, 2.3km Swim-Start 10.30am The first Cronulla Shark Island Swim was held in October 1987 on a drizzly overcast day. There was a medium swell running and the water surface was choppy. Sixty-four competitors swam from Cronulla Beach out to sea and around Shark Island and back to the beach; approximately 2.4 kilometres. There were no buoys and the competitors swam their own course causing many to have concern for their safety. There were no prizes but the race had already attracted some attention with long distance swimmer and Australian Belt Champion, David O'Brien winning the race. The most recent events have seen some of the best swimmers in Australia compete with over 1,000 entries. Notable past competitors include David O'Brien, the leading marathon swimmer in the world, and Susie Maroney. However, the majority of swimmers are recreational. The reason for the race's popularity is that it can be observed from vantage points along The Esplanade. This is the only ocean race where this is possible. Prizes have increased to $1,000 for the first male and $1,000 for the first female while the second and third prizes are $400 and $200 respectively. There are also 26 age category prizes for male and female winners.
